Photo of curved staircase in Aarhus Town Hall Denmark

Architecture or Art-tecture?

Okay – so I took the liberty of creating a new word. Well, I was inspired when I came across this picture while looking for a great architectural shot. No doubt the superb design of this striking staircase is what makes this photo great. Of course the photographer has to be given credit as well for his good eye in positioning and composing the subject and getting the exposure just right. This staircase is located in Aarhus Town Hall in Denmark and was designed by architect Arne Jacobsen. For this shot I think Art-tecture is an appropriate word.

Surreal Colour - Hohenschwangau Castle

This beautiful neogothic design castle is very picturesque from many different angles. Located on a hill above the village of Hohenschwangau in a very scenic part of southern Germany, this remarkable palace was the childhood home of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The castle was reconstructed between 1833 and 1855 from the ruins of a medieval fortress originating in the 12th century. In this beautiful photo, the yellow castle contrasts the deep blue summer sky creating a scene that looks to be right out a fairytale.

Interesting lines of a Staircase in the Montevideo Cabildo

Interesting Staircase

Once again, a simple subject combined with skillful composition and exposure results in a stunning photo. This picture jumped off the page when looking through 100’s of thumbnails of beautiful architectural pictures. The mostly monochrome theme is nicely accentuated by the strip of red tiles at the bottom. But the real story with this beautiful picture is how the various lines, both straight and curved, created by the arches, steps, staircase, window bars and walls all come together in such an interesting and artistic way. The Montevideo Cabildo is a former Goverment House from colonial days in Montevideo, Uruguay. Today it serves as a museum.

Hannover Town Hall

Hannover Town Hall is the subject of many beautiful pictures of architecturally significant buildings. This nightime picture of the Hannover Rathaus is absolutely stunning. The exposure has captured the intricacies of this 1913 building and balanced them perfectly with the surreal glow from the floodlights in the surrounding park. Combined with the magnificent reflection in the water this certainly fits my idea of a beautiful architectural photo.

Drottningholms slott - Swedens Royal Residence

cc licensed flickr photo shared by Per Ola Wiberg ~ Powi

Drottningholms slott is Swedish for Drottningholm Palace which is the residences of Sweden’s Royal Family. This beautiful stone palace was built in the late 1500s. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is a popular tourist attraction. It is also an officially recognized World Heritage Site. This fine photo somehow stood out. I think it just has a great palette of colours helped out by a pleasant combination of sky and cloud. As with most beautiful pictures, the time of day is also providing ideal lighting for the angle from which this shot was taken.
